Default color

Yes, fish see colors. To be exact, some fish see some colors. How fish
respond to color is well known for some species, unknown for others, and not
well known for most. Look at color changes during spawning. That will give
you some idea of the role color plays in that species' life cycle.

Many, perhaps most, and maybe even all, fish see movement better than they
can discern detail, shape or color. Experiments with, for example, sharks,
have shown that fish can be trained to target shapes and colors.

Because we can see color so well, we often attribute a fly's or a lure's
success or failure to its color when it was something that was responsible.

Fishing's a great mystery. If it weren't, who would waste time doing it?
