Here are some more suggestions for the catfish bait subject.
1) Leeches - squid seem similar to leeches from what I read in the
earlier post. I have liked leeches because the are easy to hook.
They are durable and can last for a very long time on the hook. I
have had better luck catching cats using a "live" presentation and
often prefer leeches because they can live a long time while hooked.
They can even last through multiple catches. I have used them to work
the bottom.
2) Stink baits (cheese baits, dough baits) - my second choice, when I
am serious about cats, is a good cheese or dough bait. These can be
bought in bait stores but also made at home. I have had friends that
had their own personal "recipes". I usually mold the bait around a
trebel hook. Good ones will last for a little while on the hook.
These baits are not as good at working an area as the bait can wear
off.
3) Chicken livers - I have several friends that have caught good sized
cats using chicken livers. Their strategy? Cast and wait. Usually
this would be one of the baits they choose during fishing
all-nighters. I have used chicken livers for bait but not had the
success that my friends had. Sometimes there just needs to be a good
match between you and the bait. Know what I mean?
4) Bluegill - Again this has, in the past, been a favorite of friends
of mine. Their strategy? Cast and wait. They've either hooked small
ones through the back or cut up slightly larger ones. Probably in
much the same way others say they use mackerel. The biggest catch
I've had was a 15 pound snapping turtle! With some patience I got it
off the hook with almost no hook damage.
I think the next time I'll try a little squid. I don't expect they'll
stick to your fingers while you're trying to hook them!
