Nice idea - I think you may have something there, if only a little more
detail can be added.

Only initial drawback I can see is the way the detailed contours would
change as the years/floods etc go by. Now if weed & snags could be overlaid
....

of sample pics plus a downloadable example Excel spreadsheet with
instructions (no macros, no viruses!)
Its an approach I'm still messing around with so I won't pretend its
polished, but it should give you some ideas.
