Get yourself a bait needle - or make one from a long needle with the end
bent double to form a long thin hook - push this through the bread, hook
your fishing hook and pull it through the other side of the bread - I use
them all the time for meat, catfood, bread and lots of other baits.

Get your self a small bag of expanders from the tackle shop, these are made
for soaking and using as a hookbait for pole fishing (you cant cast them
when they're soaked-they're like snot) but when un soaked they bring all the
carp to the top - they can't resist 'em.......I just go along the bank and
drop a few handfuls no more than a few inches from the bank before I set up
and they are into 'em almost immediately - I then sneak up and drop a piece
of bread in their path, it rarely fails and the only problems come from the
'feathered menace'.
When summertime draws on, you may notice that chum mixers lose their
effectiveness - a good idea is to flavour the water that you use to soak
them in, I've used vanilla essence and strawberry flavouring to good effect
and even oxo, you can buy flavourings from a cake making shop or any good
supermarket for about 30 - 50p - don't go to the tackle shop or he'll try to
charge you a fiver for 40 pence worth of flavouring (but it does have a
picture of a big fish on it though!)
