Caustic soda is an Alkali.

If you do decide to use caustic, add cold water to the crystals and stand
well back - it boils the water....mix it up in a deep bucket and add your
baitboxes and lids and weigh them down with a brick so that everything is
below the surface.
Any chemist will say this ... add the crystals to the water not the
other way around. Likewise if using Acid A to W.

You can use the remaining solution to clear your drains!
And to dispose of dead bodies.
