If you want to use a swimfeeder, you don't nessecarily need a feeder rod,
any rod will do, it's just that a feeder rod has a very thin, fluorescent
tip which twitches when you get a bite, you don't have to rely on this as a
bite indicator, if you use a float rod, you can cast your feeder in as
usual, set the rod down in two rodrests and pull the line down between two
of the eyes in a 'V' with a plastic bobbin at the botom, when you get a
bite, the bobbin rises and then you strike....you can use this method on any
rod and for any fish over a few ounces.

You can either get a feeder or a float rod, either will suffice for the
other type of fishing, and I'd use 4lb line to begin with, don't get the
first 4lb line you see, have a butchers at a few of them as the quality is
immensely different beween brands, you should get the thinnest diameter one
you can find, although it *will* be dearer than the others.
