Try using use barbless hooks (or crimp down the barbs on regular hooks).
They are very easy to remove without having to clutter up your vest with an
extra gadget.

bob, why do you hate america so much? you, you anti-gadget extremist.
snake, i had a kr at one time, i lost it on boone's fork during a
spill. it does work as advertised. i never replaced it as i just
use hemostats now.
three essential tools that i use...
1) a good set of non-glare clippers, preferably with a needle
(for cleaning out eyes of hooks) and a file for sharpening hooks.
2) hemostats for hook removal and can be used in knot tying. i
like the flat black ones for stealth.
3) a 30 lb. bogagrip.... been fishin some good trout waters
lately ;-) seriously, a good all-purpose utility tool such as a
gerber.
