The way it was explained to me, you only need it about 1/16 to 1/8
of an inch below the hull. If you're mounting it on a step-up, then
it's probably out of the water while you're on plane.
Thats what I figure too. Its either out of the water or getting hit
with very turbulent water when I'm running. Out here the depth
sounder doesn't do anything but scare you when you are up on step
anyway. You have to keep a sharp look out for sandbars, and never
panic and let off the throttle when you realize the water under you
is too shallow to float at rest.
I don't worry about that on my kayak even though my Hobie Outback is pretty
fast!
