I was doing a little research and found that some of the water between
the campground down to Piru lake is rated at class 3 - to class 4. Too
hairy for a pontoon boat, would definitly need a kayak and alot of
experience. Funny, the water near the campground is mostly fairly wide
and shallow...

Havent tubed Big Bear but have fished the West and East fork of the San
Gabriel a number of times. Both have very fun stretches of water. Lots
of eager rainbows that come up for a dry fly.

I have considered doing this very trip myself via canoe. I can tell you
from hiking up from Lake Piru that the last few miles of water from Blue
Point campground leading into Piru Lake is very shallow and narrow. You
may have to walk the boat through that stretch - mostly pebbles where your
boots sink about 6 inches into the wet stones with every footstep. Is
someone gonna drop you off at Frenchman's or are you gonna risk leaving
your vehicle there? In SoCal it's probably best to hoof it. Besides, for
trout fishing around here you'll probably end up stressing the fish too
much during the warmer months. The other thing that has intrigued me is
float tubing at Big Bear - have you ever done it? The most consistent
fishing action I've had in SoCal is fly fishing the surf. Check out
www.garybulla.com and www.fliflicker.com. I did have a great dry fly day
on the West Fork San Gabriel last February between the mile 3 and mile 5
markers. Pulled two or three fish out of every spot while bicycling up
the road.
