Default stell leaders

Hi,
Does anyone have any suggestions about casting sal****er flies with
steel leaders. I bought some thin 10 inch leaders with swivel type
clasps at
the ends but when I use them I can't get any distance - like half of
what I
get with just a fly. I was wondering if I should try say 100 lb mono
in
some sort of twisted configuration. I haven't tried something like
that yet.
Perhaps a bluefish can bite through 100 lb mono as easily as 10 lb.

thanks,

CW

Seeing my initials, I figured I was obliged to reply. I think the bulk
of the problem is the ectra hardware and the hinges built into those
leaders. They are designed for spin casting and bait casting, and
often fail in those snaps and swivels. A much better solution is hard
wire. Find the bronze plated stainless steel, and get 65 pound
strength, I can't remember the diameter right now. The knot is a
haywire twist which is easy enough to tie without any tools. I prefer
to tie a hatwire twist loop in one end, and then use a trilene knot or
clinch knot to tie the leader to the wire, then another haywire twist
to tie the fly on.

No hinge, no extra weight, bomb proof.
