Whatever they were, they were probably about as convincing as the
explanations we heard as to why Martin deserved any chance at a second term.

Had the Conservatives offered something more than warmed-over Mike
Harris style neo-con policies, Martin would not have had a second
chance. Harper and the tall foreheads in the Conservatives have to
realize that the polices that sell in Alberta won't sell anywhere
else, least of all in Ontario. Failing that, voters will always opt
for the Liberals on the basis of, "better the devil you know." By
cosing up to the neo-con, social dinosaur, hard right of the old
Reform Party, the Conservatives lost a significant proportion of the
old PC vote and that did them in. Never has a Liberal government been
this vulnerable on so many fronts and the Conservatives blew it by
having a vacuum where their policy platform was supposed to be. The
Liberals filled the vacuum with their negative ads, painting Harper as
a man who sell the country out. When the voter went behind the screen,
they couldn't bring themselves to pull the trigger on Martin, and
given what Harper and his gang offered us (or failed to offer us), you
can't blame them.

BTW, his buddy Ralph did a nice job of shooting him in the back.
