Excuse me for butting in here, but I have a question on using snaps in this
manner. As a youth, when I was almost literally just killing time fishing, I
used them all the time like this. Made switching from lure to lure,
crankbait to top water, etc, a breeze. I seemed to catch fish and never
thought that much about it at that time.

Do you think using a snap swivel/plain snap affects the amount of bites you
get at all today? I've pondered using them again, just to save some time and
hassle of having to retie every time I want to just change colors or maybe
sizes of lures, but am wary against such a wiley opponent such as a
largemouth.

If you do use snaps or snap swivels for LMB fishing, what size and color
would you recommend? 1"? Black?

For the DS rig.
Tie a small hook directly to the line using a Palomar knot and have a long
tag. 24"+. After you tie the palomar feed the line back through the eye
again so that the hook rides point up on the line. Then put your weight on
the bottom at the desired distance.
As for retrieve. Crawl, shake, pause, any number of things. All depends on
what the little guys want that day.
