I don't remember the specifics, but IIRC the reasons had to do with
raising a
family and doing business there. Nobody said they were sorry they had gone
there, but they all said they were glad to not be there anymore. g
Also, from what I have heard, it isn't very easy for westerners to travel
around China without an escort. I know we always had one the short time I
was
there, but I we didn't try to go around without them so I'm not sure if
they
were officially required or not. You should check into what travel
restrictions may exist.

Actually, I think the general rap on Shanghai is that it's a tough,
mercantilist city. Everybody is looking for a way to make a few bucks.
Western morality, ethics, and legality are subordinated to that objective.
That can be rather interesting. But tiresome. But it's good to spend some
time in China. It's got to be a big part of the future. And for people with
initiative and adventure, there have to be some interesting fishing
opportunities in the mountains out west.
