Default Open mouth fly-casting technique

Greetings,
Years ago (late 60's), I was watching the Wide World of Sports and Curt
Gowdy was hosting a fishing/ fly casting show, where a gentleman used an
open mouth casting technique. I was a kid at the time, so I can't
remember
much other than he put the line in his mouth during the duration of the
front and back movements, and opened his mouth on the forward cast to
release. I also do remember Gowdy saying he was a champion in distance
casting for accuracy. Does anyone here remember the fisherman's name, or
anything about the open mouth casting technique? Any links would be
helpful.

I don't know the episode you are talking about, but this sounds like the
typical way to cast if you don't have a stripping basket. You make large
loops and hold them in your mouth, pulling them free as you false cast. On
the last doublehaul, you just drop the mouthful at the perfect time. I use
it occasionally, but I always worry about stuff in the surface film that
gets on the line..
