Default Fly Rod Guide Wraps and Cracked Epoxy

"No Left Turn" wrote in message ...
During our last
Dallas Fly Fishers club outing,
I did a casual visual survey of the
condition of guide wraps.

In the bright sun it was easy and obvious to see the
occasional shimmer of cracked and de-laminating
clear epoxy. (go out side and try it !)

Is a thick glob of epoxy really the way to go?
Slick and fat and shinny? Yes
Looks good new? You bet?
Does brittle epoxy flex with the rod? Well you figure it out...

Anyway, are some epoxies better than others?
Is there a more flexible Epoxy?

What are problems with Clear Polyurethane?
Does is delaminte too easily?

Any suggestions for incredible
web sites on this subject?
(the internest is awesome!)

Thanks!

Steve cracking of the rod finish happens on most rods and you can let
it get pretty bad until you have to remove the guides and refinish
them. You could just put on another coat of finish after cleaning the
old wrap with denatured or isoprople alcohol. There are many different
brands of rod epoxy on the market and some of the best are Flex Coat
and Classic Coat and you can get flexcoat from Cabelas. Just make sure
you mix the epoxy by following the directions and rotate the rod while
the epoxy sets up. I am sure your local tackle shop can help you with
the process if you want assistance. And www.rodguild.com can also
help.
