Fully automatic weapons are very useful when shooting deer on the run.

Believe it or not I heard them being used a couple times back when I
used to hunt deer. I always still hunted, usually with my back up
against a tree. The feel of 24" of hardwood protecting my spinal
column was a good one.

The hell with hunting...fully automatic weapons are a blast just to fire. In
fact, just having a powerful gun in hand has a certain thrill to it. Ask
anyone who has ever gone shooting with friends, or trained for special
forces or the military. Its not for everybody, but it definately is a real
thrill for many. The times I've done it, I've really enjoyed it. I was in a
3-sided sand pit, with ear protection, open visibility of everyone else, and
we were very careful. The guns came out of locked cases, were registered,
and the owners knew what they were doing.
I find it strange that many who oppose any restrictive gun laws are
reluctant to just say "Hey, its a lot of fun, and I want to do it because it
IS a lot of fun!" Its their strange evasion through half-truths or dogmatism
that makes me feel uncomfortable. When someone says "I need to defend myself
from burgulars" or "It's my constitutional right" I get uncomfortable; their
rationale just doesn't seem to hold up (Like anyone *truly* lives somewhere
that dangerous, or they care about defending any OTHER constitutional rights
they may or may not have).
But when they say "Hey, I really like the feeling of firing an AK47. As long
as its legal, I'm going to do it and defend my right to do it." I have to
respect their honesty and admit it IS a real thrill! And when someone is
that honest and realistic about it, I feel more comfortable that they'll be
responsible and keep a trigger lock on it, keep it stored at their rod & gun
club, and protect it carefully. Those folks, I feel can be trusted with
guns, and I support their right to have them; military automatic weapons and
all.
But when someone claims, with wide open eyes and straight face, that they
actually need this thing to defend themselves or their constitutional
integrity, or that they need to be more heavily armed than the local
national guard 'just in case', the first thing I want to do is get them the
hell away from that gun!! I don't even trust those folks with a hunting
shotgun or a .22! Funny thing; these are the very people that it is hardest
to get them away from.
Out of their 'cold dead hands....'. God, what garbage!!!!
