LAKELAND — A virus may be the culprit for 50 dead fish that appeared in Lakeland's Lake Hollingsworth last week. If largemouth-bass
virus is confirmed, it would be the state's first known incidence of a virus that has killed thousands of bass across the country.
The virus could threaten the state's $1 billion freshwater-fishing industry, especially in bass-fishing destinations in Lake and
Osceola counties. State biologists need to take more samples and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is asking
residents who see a fish struggling to capture it and contact officials so it can be tested.
