I hold it a bit different Rich, only my pinkk goes beneath the reel, and
then not far enough to contact the center of the underside. My other
fingers face forward, with my index finger contacting the rod only. I don't
touch the line at all while palming...

I had to take a rod out of the closet and try it to see exactly where my
hand fits. I palm the reel with the pinky and ring finger wrapped under
the
reel seat, the birdflipping finger extended forward and half-hooked under
the seat ahead of the reel, and the index finger around the front of the
reel and thumb over the top, meeting with the index finger to lightly
pinch
the line ahead of the line guide.

I know my hands are probably somewhat bigger than yours, but that photo's
with a full sized, round Ambassadeur, not one of them wimpy little low
profile reels.
My middle finger would probably hit blank on those shortened reel seat, no
foregrip deals. But to be honest, 95% of my feel comes directly from the
line, through the index finger.
