A quick sports survey...
B J Conner I did the 100 and 220 as well. Best I ever did in the 100 was
10.3. I was
4th in that race. Two of the guys in that race did 9.6 and 9.7 in high
school and later tied the world record in college. If I remember correctly
one was co-holder of the world record for a while.
In college I opted for loading trucks, picking olives, oranges and other
fun
stuff.
my personal best was 10.1, run in a state regional. this was 1959, and
there were no black kids in the competition. i finished second, and the kid
that won tied the n.c. state record with a 9.7. he was so far in front of
me, i thought he had broken the world record. it's amazing how much
difference in distance that is represented by four tenths of a second.
when i dropped by the track office at unc as a freshman, interested in
going out for the varsity, the coach asked me about my times. when i told
him 10.1, he kind of smiled and said, "well, we might be able to develop you
as a quarter miler..." since i often had to be carried off the track at the
end of my 220's, i thanked him, walked away, and never even went to a track
meet during my time in chapel hill.
