That "did everything the instructor asked" part was probably a big part
of it. Many men have egos too large to allow them to hear instruction
(present company excepted, of course...) I know of a shooting
instructor who claims he can have a kid shooting respectable scores
at trap or skeet in a single afternoon, but adults require much,
much more time.
