.... what specific things have others learned here ? ( yeah, about fly
fishing )

Not much. Um........well, virtually nothing.

Like some others (I presume), I arrived quite some time ago at a point where
I'm not much interested in learning anything more about the mechanics of
fishing. As a matter of fact, it is no longer really that much about the
fishing for me anyway. I rarely fish alone. Virtually all of my fishing in
the past four years (apart from a bit of desultory casting when and where I
happened to have gear with me when visiting a piece of water for whatever
reason) has been in the company of the marvelous people I've met through
this newsgroup. A shared love of fly fishing is reason enough to get
together with these folks......but any of a number of others would do as
well.

I will never forget the time George left me to drown in the Wisconsin
River.......or Wayno's ass shining in the moonlight......or uncle Wally's
smirk as he admired my fish and invited me to go back to the cooler and get
a beer.......or that flea and tick infested bitch on the porch......or
John.....um......well, John doing whatever it is that John does.....or
sausages on the banks of Penn's......or Joel fishing at 11 degrees
Fahrenheit up to his ass in snow.....or Jeffie's bloody and half scabbed
ears.....or dancing in spandex tights on a bridge near Coburn.....or
copperheads on the trail.....or Frank shouting, "What?" from WAY too far and
in the wrong direction from where he was making all the noise for which I
was taking his and the Lord's names in vain.....or the holy hand
grenade.....or putanesca sauce......or Petah receding in the distance on the
trail.....or Dave and the speed bumps......or shrieking
ospreys......or........

Yeah, I know that's not what you asked above.....but it DOES speak to the
question in the thread title.
