You're out in your favorite stream.....one whose details you know
intimately. For quite a while now you've been watching a particular
submerged log......over there, just off the left bank, on the inside of the
curve. Nearly every time you come out here you see a terrific trout.....the
biggest you've ever seen in this stream.....come up and take a bug. But,
it's a difficult lie and you know this fish is a picky eater. Then, one day
when you know exactly what it's after and the conditions are just right, you
lay out a perfect cast. You know you've got the right bug on because you've
seen the brute come up several times and you know EXACTLY what he's taking.
You mend line......the tippet is slack and the line is taught......no
drag.....not even micro-drag........10 inches to go, and you just KNOW he's
going to take it this time.....and then.....and then......and then a STUPID
Rocky Mountain whitefish comes up out of nowhere and sucks in your bug! And
there ain't a DAMNED thing you can do about it except let him go and hope
that the trout didn't notice. But......and this is the good part!......the
trout ain't any smarter than the stupid whitefish......so you cast
again.........
