Walt and I headed out of Little Creek Sunday Morning originally headed
for Cape Henry and VB Oceanfront. Only my second rockfish trip of the
season.
On the way out, the boat's internal autopilot took over and pointed us
toward the 4A and Fisherman's Island area. I tried to override it for a
while, but eventually decided to head North. Dropped lines in at 9AM
near the Nautilus shoal, just east of the bay/ocean boundary.
Things started off fairly slowly, but Walt put one 40 inch rock in the
box after a half hour or so. Caught this one in 15 ft depth. We kept
working North, heading toward a small group of boats and a large group
of birds. We caught and released several smaller schoolies (about 25").
Most of the boats left the area as the birds seemed to all head off
toward the high rise. We stayed put, and were rewarded with some good
fish around 11 AM. Ended up with a pair of release citations (45-47"),
a near miss weight citation (39.5 lbs) and another for the box that
weighed about 30-35#. Caught them on stretch 25s and 6" storm shad.
Unfortunately, the bite didn't last long. It seemed like they hit
during the time of slower current. Once the water started running hard,
the bite ended. While it wasn't great for numbers, we certainly found
some quality fish.
