Oh, fighting fires in sub-zero weather can be a real problem. The worst I
ever experienced was a big Victorian home three doors west of my home. The
temp that day was -30. It wasn't bad while firefighting in the house, but
it was basically gone by the time we received the call. So when we pulled
out and fought it from the outside, it got really ugly.
I had frostbitten feet, fingers, ears, nose and cheekbones, plus, I slipped
on some ice (go figger) and dislocated my shoulder. The water mist froze on
everything and I had almost an inch of ice build-up on me. When I got back
to the station, they had to turn a water hose on me to thaw out my gear
enough to get it off! That was a long day.....
