and I believe the are the largest database for companies and their
backgrounds.

Well, Thomas Register might be the largest *free* database, but there are
certainly larger. The ones we have are subscription based. I've always
turned to Thomas (and in days of yore, they were "those huge green volumes
over there") for information about manufacturing companies, rather than
service companies, although their web site says that they include service
companies.


Also, if you find them, I believe that Thomas Register give all the pertinent
info
about the CEO, President, Board of Dir. and what not. Will likely tell ya
which
states they are licensed to do business.

And if that is what you are looking for, and Thomas doesn't help you, get
yourself to the nearest research library that has a business collection, and
they should be able to help you out. Off the top of my head, I'm not sure
where one would look to find in which states companies are licensed to do
business.
