Any decent marine dealer will have sections of plastic coated chain used for
anchor chain. I use them because he don't clank around, and they last
better in the wet environment. I imagine for your application the plastic
coating might start to wear off after a while, but nothing dragged along the
bottom will last for ever.

I have an idea for fishing creeks from a canoe. Actually I got the
idea from a show I saw last week. They were fishing for trout out of a
rowboat. They threw a chain out of the bow of the boat and let it drag
along the bottom. It kept the boat aligned nicely with the shore. I
was thinking about doing the same thing with my canoe. I wouldn't need
much weight, just enough to drag the bottom and keep my canoe
straight. I'd use it in the slow deep sections. The question is what
to use. I was think about some sort of cable or chain that is covered
so it won't make noise while it scrapes the bottom. Maybe a foot long
piece of chain tied to some rope. Also something that won't get stuck.
Any ideas? Anyone ever tried this? It seems like it would work unless
the wind is stronger than the current.
Chuck.
