In Alabama, we've had a couple of weeks of unseasonable warm weather.
I went out Sunday and caught three nice bass on a rattle trap ripped
through shallow water. The biggest was 4.5 lbs. Great way to welcome
the new year. Took me 10 min to unhook that gal, because she'd taken
the trap deep in the back of the throat. All were released. The bite
was on for about 20 minutes, but I couldn't get any more to stay on
the hook. I probably should have switched to something slower,
because I could feel fish short striking the trap. I had to rip it,
because there were weeds at about 3 ft. They wouldn't touch a jig or
worm and I couldn't make myself stop throwing the rattletrap for some
other crankbait after I boated the 4.5 lber. Fish were all schooled
up and there were some monsters rolling through the shad. On one cast
I had four blowups on a zara spook...no hookup, even with nerves of
steel not to set the hook early.
I'm skipping out early Wednesday to give them another try before the
cold front rolls in Thu/Fri.

So am I the only nut who's still fishing for largemouth this time of
year? Going out to toss the crank bait this morning..
My first club tournament is a week from Sunday - will be out a couple of days
next week checking it out. Have not been in a couple of weeks for bass in
big lakes, but the few casts in my pond have been ignored.
