Spring is definitely here and temperatures are starting to climb into
the 50s and 60s. The big news right now seems to be on the freshwater
side of things. The Maryland DNR has begun their annual spring
stockings and freshwater anglers are enjoying some early season
action. These stockings are done statewide on a number of streams;
check out the Maryland DNR website

I've even been enjoying the trout fishing here on the Eastern Shore.
Bead head nymphs and small wooly buggers have been the flies of
choice, with PowerBait and salmon eggs being productive choices for
spin-fishermen. Hatchery rainbows have averaged between 10 and 14"
with some in the 16" range. These fish put up a great fight on
ultra-light tackle and are a sure treat after a long winter.

The shad and perch should start running strong within the next week or
two, depending on Mother Nature. Keep a rod in your car and look out
for cars parked on the shoulder of the road. The TidalFish message
boards are also good sources of information on when and where you
should fish. I've heard that the shad are running strong in VA waters,
so it's just a matter of time for MD anglers. The Maryland DNR reports
that the upper Choptank is showing signs of yellows and whites in
nets, so the perch runs on the Chester and other Bay tributaries
should....
