Default South African Tournament

Hi all,

The Albert Falls Classic was held at Albert Falls Dam outside
Pietermaritzburg (near Durban) in South Africa on the 6th and 7th September
1996.

The tournament was one of the largest (perhaps the largest) held in South
Africas to date. 680 anglers on 350 odd boats competed for prizes worth
over R100,000. First prize was a fully rigged Bass boat (locally
manufactered) and numerous other prizes were on offer.

There was some doubt about fishing conditions. The 1995 tournament was
held with the water at 11% full and *extremely* muddy. (I caught 1 fish
and got into the prizes!) These fears were unfounded - the fishing was
*dynamite*!!!

The SA record was broken twice during the tournament with a 12.06lb lunker
winning the boat. I have never heard of a tournament where such large
numbers of *lunker* fish were caught. In practice, many anglers caught 4 &
5 fish over 10 lbs. The tournament results were amazing!!

Bass over 5kg (11lb) - 3
Bass over 4kg (9lb) - 17
Bass over 3kg (6.7lb) - 71
Bass over 2kg (4.5lb) - 127

In total, 1.3 tons (2912 lb) of bass were caught and released. The average
weight being over 2lbs.

This will give the sport in South Africa a massive boost - well done to the
organisers!

Does anyone know of other tournaments with such fantastic results ?

Yes Ron you are correct. The biggest bass was 5.47Kgs (12.06 lbs) caught by Tom Wills and is still the biggest fish caught to date during this competition. Also the SA Record for a mere 21 days until broken during the Nationals at Alberts !Will try and find the photo to attach.
