Default Southbound Sportfishing Key West Report Aug. 11th

August 12th, 2010

The action remains steady along the reef with lots of Sharks, Barracudas and snappers. Both Yellow tails and Gray snapper are biting well and providing great action between “big fish” bites by Sharks, barracudas and jacks. Most days, getting a limit of snapper is easy and most customers are getting more shark bites than they want. Of course it only takes a couple of 100lb sharks on 30lb test line to wear down even the best anglers especially in the August heat.
Dolphin fishing is still not what you would expect; there are still a few nice ones out there. I would also expect some big Wahoo to be caught this time of year, but I haven’t heard of any yet. Maybe tomorrow is the day, got to think positive!
The bonito action has been good to the West and I would expect the Black Fin tuna to show up some time soon. They are closely related and feed similarly, if conditions are right for one many times its right for the other. Sailfish are also commonly found where and when bonito are feeding. There has been a few around and hopefully more show up.
Still no oil and still none expected, my sympathies to all the fishermen in the gulf that are affected by the spill and its aftermath, but our water is fine and the weather is great. It’s a great time to go fishing in Key West!
