Nice TR, thanks! A 20" whitefish probably gives you a nice fight. Do
you ever eat them?

Yes they are. Glad to hear it's not all C&R nowadays. :-) Merry
christmas!

Indeed I do eat them. I soak them overnight in a solution of salt brine
and sugar, and then pat them dry and let them sit and dry further until
the become shiny with a "pellicle." Make sure the smoker is scrubbed
clean before you smoke them. The cleaner TSP (trisodium phosphate) works
very well. I like to use apple or alder wood chips. Mesquite and hickory
are too strongly flavored.

I can catch a virtually unlimited number of whitefish in the Salmon
River (ID) by dead drifting PTs and GRHEs, and I love going out
meatfishing with my creel, and giving away the smoked product to my
friends, along with some homebrew.

JR, I recognize some things from your pictures. All those streams over
there and I never can get them all 'straight' anyway.

I loved your TR, and I also have a trip planned to the same fishery in
March. Anytime I can catch "lots and lots of smallish fish", I be happy. 4
weight, an indicator (fi'n they ain't takin' drys) with short leader (4' is
about right I think) seems it might work eh?

As to the, 'checking the fly boxes" I am famous for taking everything EXCEPT
(sorry I yelled) what is working. Although, one time (ask the Randy the
Bugcaster about this) I did seem to match the hatch and landed some fairly
nice Chinook Salmon -- but alas it is rare to say the least.

JR, I'm jealous of the trip and wishing I could get out. Something always
comes up to stop the trip.

Padishar, don't know about matching the hatch, but it was kind of nice to
have the guides following us around trying to figure out how you did that
salmon thing when no one else was hooking up.

Padishar, even nymphing, I'd go with a longer leader than that; 8-9 ft
5x is fine in most circumstances and if you go to small dries or tiny
nymphs you can add a bit of 6x or 7x. In general, though, the fish are
not tippet shy. A fellow on the Westfly forum recommended fishing small
egg patterns in riffles below where one has located a pods of whitefish.
Somehow it never occurred to me to thing of egg patterns there, but I
think I'll be carrying a few on my next outing.

Anyhow, if either of you does makes the trip down and wants company,
give me a ping here.

Do you ever just filet and eat them? Are they tasty enough for that?
