Default Structure Fishing

Just wanted to share with the group.

I've gotten a number of good tips in here and this season I am going to
learn to fish "off the banks" if it kills me. One of the other things I did
that turned out to be a great investment is I purchased from BP a Dvd by Woo
Daves on Structure fishing. It's got to be an hour or so long and is filled
with great tips. It's done in Woo's typical "average guy" kinda style which
makes it very understandable and fun to watch. There are a few but very few
negatives to the dvd. I watched it last eve for the first time and it was
late so I took no notes, but I think it's a great teaching tool and for
those like me who've been bank beaters most of their fishing careers, I'd
highly recommend it.

I also got one of his VHS tapes on river fishing. I think river fishing is
one of my fishing strengths, but always need to learn more and I'm sure
there's got to be some good info on that as well. These teaching tools are
only $10 so I think well worth the investment.

Joshuall,

Not sure if you fish competitively, but no longer can you not learn to
fish off shore somewhat. I think some people can still get away with
fishing shoreline structure thoughout a tournament, and still place
consistently, but with as competitive as things are now, and fisherman
are getting better and better every year, and fish are getting
conditioned to common presentations, it is probably in your best
interest to learn to fish offshore structure. I think it is a great
move on your part.
One thing I learned is that as small as the reefs on Winnebago look on a
map, they are very very intimidating once you get on top of them.
Fishing a small one effectively could easily take you 4 or so hours if
the fish are not active and up on top. The slight inside bend, a small
rise in the rock formation, a change from boulders to smaller chunk
rock, finding those things become the key. Patterns within the
patterns. Then you have to deal with the wind blowing you off your spot
(marker bouys are key, at least 4 or 5 of them). A GPS unit is also
very very key to offshore structure. I am hoping Warren will jump in on
this, he has a way he uses his GPS units that really help you key in on
certain areas using electronics.
Good luck, and keep us updated.

Thanks for your thoughts Chris. I dont fish competitively any more. I used
to be the president of a 40-50 man club out this a way. In fact I joined the
club not to fish competitively so much as to learn fishing from what I
recognized as some of the best fishermen around. I enjoyed the competition,
but it wasn't my bag. I think in the ten years I was with the club I place
4th once and 10th once lol lol. But we had a hellava time and tons of fun.

I have had enough competition in my professional life and did all the sports
thangs when I was young. So now I'm pretty good at figuring things out and
just want to keep improving. I recognize my bank beating is a limitation and
that frankly . . . It drives me nuts to see guys out in the middle of no
where on a lake or river catching the heck out of fish and me not knowing
how to do that. . . thence the video. And I'm glad to hear you thought it
was good as well.
