Does anyone know where one can buy brass beads cheap? They are so expensive
in the fly shops. Is there a wholesale place?

I don't know if you have any hobby shops close by you but Michaels, or
Hobbytown or the like and the large hobby type shops should carry stuff like
that...I would think... Hell, even check Walmarts fabric section...

For many flies, especially smaller flies, try glass beads. Super cheap and
they will add just that bit of weight to get a fly down.

The beads I've seen in the craft stores are plated plastic. They are
cheap, and nice and shiny, but have no weight. Since the wieght is a
principle factor in adding a bead to the head or thorax of a fly, they
wouldn't be of much use.

The beads I've seen in the craft stores are plated plastic. They are

Specialty bead shops (I've discovered that there are a lot of them around
since Becky took up beadwork) frequently carry solid brass
beads.....sometimes in a very wide variety of shapes and sizes. However,
the holes tend to be fairly small because they are meant to be threaded on a
thin thread or wire (there are exceptions.....made for use with heavier
cords or even leather thongs), selections can vary widely and sometimes very
quickly, and monetary savings would be questionable as prices vary as widely
as every other consideration.

That said, there's potential here for a whole lot of
creativity....especially considering that they also come in copper, bronze,
silver, pewter, tin and other metals, as well as a bewildering array of
non-metallic materials.

No doubt you can track down good prices for truly wholesale quantities
(thousands), but the best deal I've found on reasonable quantities for
the individual tyer is from Dan Bailey's: $5.95 per 100.
