I have decided to start fishing again, been a long time since I fished.
I looked at what gear I have left and am not sure of my rod and reel really compliment each other, Rods: 1) Diawa Eliminator medium light 6' 2) Shakespeare Ugly Stick medium(i think) handles 6-15 lb test SPL1100 7' lite Reels: 1) Abu Garcia Cardinal 764GIi ( 8lb test) 2) Abu Garcia 874 (closed face) 3) Shakespeare SIT 2701DB 4) Shimano Symetre Aero SY1000F ( 4 or 6 lb test) Do any of my rods match well with any of my reels? Does the monofilament go bad? I assume reel 4 is an ultra lite. My thinking is to get a bait caster (quantum acs II) with a 6' med rod, find a rod for the ulta lite. Please let me know what you think I am open to all suggestions. Thanks in advance! |

Stonger, lighter, lasts longer. Put some 8lb test braid on that Shimano and it'll cast like 2lb test mono. I'm not going to comment on the rod and reel stuff. You have spent 50 times the amount of money I have spent on rods and reels in the past 10 years. This is just me, but i replace all my line every year (at least). Maybe I
don't need to do that but it makes me feel better and new line isn't so likely to "kink" and coil up. I was just looking at an ugly stick fly rod the other day in Dicks sporting god. Some folks have good things to say about them... some don't. Why not mount each of the reels on the rods, take them out back and see how they feel? You could also hit the websites for each of the manufacturers and look up the part numbers for specs. Most companies also have an 800 number so you can call and ask questions of them. _______________________________ Everything from fishing to Freaks www.sprattoo.com _______________________________ "Sportinus" wrote in message ups.com... You know some people smart off like they know a whole lot, but really said
nothing at all... I'll leave it at that. Now to your questions, seeing you are just getting back into fishing, what kind of fishing are you going to be doing? I mainly fish inshore in N. Florida, I use a 7' home made rod (I build my own rods) rated up to 20# test, on it I have a Abu Garcia 6500 baitcaster. With a 3 oz sinker I cast out 285' consistantly. Last weekend I hooked into 9, yes 9... 12 lb and larger Jack Cravelle... 6 came home with me. The other 3 a man on the bridge who had bad luck all day, well he still has bad luck... So, I really would not speak well of store bought rods. Seeing I do not own lite gear like you are talking about, I would venture a guess that your 2 #1's and a 1/2 to 3/4 oz should do it for you. I will never again put braided line on a baitcaster! 3 of 5 casts it
birdnested. My best friend who taught me baitcasters even tried, didn't work. On the 6th try... I pulled out the snippers and off it came, that and the spool went in the trash! I only use Berkley Big Game 15# or 20# test line. wrote in message ... On 22 Mar 2005 19:34:03 -0800, "Sportinus" wrote: I have decided to start fishing again, been a long time since I fished. All 18 baitcasters that I own are spooled with PowerPro. I guide people that have never used a baitcaster in their life and yet they're able to cast quite decently withing minutes. By the end of the day, they're usually using one like they've been baitcasting all their lives. I actually prefer to use braided line, especially on baitcasters for the simple reason that if it does get backlashed, it isn't damaged by kinking like mono line is. One good backlash with mono and the line should be replaced because it's weakened by kinking, that doesn't happen with braid. I also prefer the sensitivity of the braided line, as well as the no stretch properties that give me superior hooksets. Every time that I've heard of people having problems with their braided line, it comes down to one problem, it was never spooled properly in the first place. Because braid is so slippery and such a fine diameter, it's fairly easy for it to slip down into the spool. This will cause backlashes, each and every time. What you have to do is tie the line on the spool, THEN secure it to the spool with a small piece of electrical tape. This will keep the line from spinning on the spool under pressure. NOW, wind the line on, under heavy tension to insure that the line is packed on the spool tightly. If you do this, you shouldn't have any problems using a casting reel and braided line. -- Steve @ OutdoorFrontiers http://www.outdoorfrontiers.com G & S Guide Service and Custom Rods http://www.herefishyfishy.com |

I'll have to give this method a shot, as simple a fix as this sounds... but
I've seen weirder things in my life... Peace to you, Bill "Steve @ OutdoorFrontiers" wrote in message ... "Oldsquid" wrote in message . .. One other question, you said you guide, just how far are you casting, what
weight are you using and how long are your poles? I use 7' heavy action poles, Abu Garcia 6500, 15 lb test, 3 oz weights, and cast 285 ft all the time...
