Over the winter I started dabbling in trying to make handmade crankbaits. I
have already carved out 4 different bodies. All from balsa. Now I am sorta stuck and don't know which way to go. I am having a hard time with painting. I don't know the best method for attaching hooks. Balsa is hard to work with in the sense its easily chipped. Is there a better wood for the begginer? Also is there any good info on the internet that any of you could point me towards? I want to try and keep it simple as possible. I would like to keep it one piece. I have seen some stuff on two peice. Two piece seems a little taxing for someone like me just starting out. As far as painting I have heard a urethyne coat is best to start with. Well crap I don't even know the best method for putting on the lips. Help! THis is something I really want to do. |

There was a great little 1 page article in Field & Stream just a few
months (5? 6?) ago on how to make your own lures. If I can find the issue, I'll let you know, or try your local library |

Balsa plug bodies should be carved in two mirro image pieces. They will not work without some lead in them to give them a bit of weight around the center of gravity. The BEST way to hang the hooks is off an internal wire harness. Several coats of quality balsa sealer/filler will give you a hard enough base finish, and there are any number of very hard clear coats to go over your actual color pattern coats with.
