Becky just finished reading "The Last American Man" by Elizabeth Gilbert.
The book is the story of one Eustace Conway who, after a nasty childhood or something has become a "unique naturalist" according to the homepage of his camp/school, Turtle Island, hidden somewhere in the hinterlands near Triplett, roughly 10-12 miles east of Boone. Based on her reading, she thinks it might be an interesting place to take some of her students. Any of youse mugs know anything about this guy or his program? Wolfgang |

He moved in to a tipi (Sp?) at about age 17 on some land outside Boone. He lived in the tipi for about 10 or so years and then began building log cabins on the land (40 or so acres?) He used horse and mule power with wooden sleds to move rocks and trees, planted gardens, and hunted for his foods. If I'm not mistaken, he named the place after Gary Snyder's book of poetry. Turtle Island is a living, breathing naturalists classroom. I think his mother was a professor at ASU for many years, too. http://www.wildnesswithin.com/landandn.html http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...oogle+Se arch Mark |

It is good to know that there are still people out there worried and helping nature and that the students I teach can benefit from this. Maybe if I ever get down there to check out Turtle Island I will stop by and say hello, maybe even drag Wolfgang along for the ride. :-) Thanks again for responding and offering knowledge and information, Becky Droster ( a friend of Wolf's) |

Peter Yes, I had been told that or read the same before. I don't recall if I read it while researching Gary Snyder, for an English class at ASU, or for what reason? I know I would have researched the title of his book of poetry "Turtle Island," as it won a Noble Prize for literature or a Pulitzer one? 'Ol Gary is an interesting sort! One of my favorite poems of his is: ****ing Watching A Waterfall I haven't read much, if any poetry, since finishing up at ASU. Currently, I'm reading David McCullough's "1776" Mark |

Greatly appreciated by many and derided by local rednecks, as some tree huggin' fruitcake. Personally, I'd wear the latter as a badge of honor, if I had his talents! As far as getting down this away, I should have had the decency to have made your acquaintance at the Anti-Clave the other year, but, unfortunately, matters beyond my control prevented me from attending. I hope to make it up y'alls way one day, and hope that I will be welcomed to some of your world famous veggies! Take care of yourself and the wolfman, Mark --who is heartened to hear that Wolfgang still has a friend :~^) -- |

I recall hearing about that cabin, but I was only in that area once (during Uncle Wally's 2000 Spring Fling) and never got to see it......didn't even know where it was.....but have just found the road on a map. Looks like a nice neighborhood. Speaking of cabins, have you gotten much beyond creating a relatively flat spot on that cliff you bought over near Robbinsville yet? ![]() i think it's about a thousand acres now. google eustace conway & turtle island and you'll get a web site with info about his eco-friendly programs. he does a lot of work with kids - excellent reputation. eustace is world famous...been on the tonight show, written up in national magazines, etc. his brother judson runs a fly shop and guide service in boone. they are the real thing... Thanks, Jeff (and Mark and Peter). I just called Becky and talked her through the process of locating and reading messages on ROFF. She asks me to convey her thanks to all. Wolfgang |
