I want to thank everyone for the warm welcome and all of the input and
advice regarding spinning rods/reels. After a little debate I opted to
purchase a Shimano Clarus 6'6" medium heavy spinning rod with a fast taper.
Decided to stick with Shimano for my reel as well and purchased a Shimano
Sedona 2500. I'm spooled up, rigged up and ready to rock n' roll!

If anybody is interested I'll be sure to post again once I've had a chance
to get a feel for everything and have formulated an opinion on the gear.

Until then...happy fishing to you all!

Jake

Decided to spool it up with 12lb. Berkeley Trilene XT.

Also, I noticed that the reel has what I'd refer to as a slight hesitation
if I'm reeling slowly. My girlfriends new Daiwa reel on the other hand is
smooth as silk. I called the baitshop I purchased the reel from and they
wondered if it might need to be oiled. But, it's a brand new reel that, I'd
assume, was properly oiled at the factory. Should I take it back to the
shop or go straight to applying some reel lubrication. I don't have a
problem lubing it up if need be, but, it's a new reel and something tells me
it shouldn't be needed. Has anyone else had similar experiences? Should I
be concerned?

Thanks.

I would first of all make certain that the reel is lubed properly. I think
that many times, from sitting in hot cargo containers and store shelves,
that many times the grease and oil runs out from where it needs to be to
places that it isn't.

A classic example is a high end Garcia Morrum reel that I had once. It
didn't seem as smooth as I thought a $400 reel should be. So, out of
curiosity, I took it apart and the entire gear assembly was dry of grease.
All of it had pooled into the bottom of the reel. Once I cleaned the old
grease out, re-lubed and oiled, it was smooth as silk.

So it's possible that you have encountered a similar problem. I'd lube it
and if that doesn't solve the problem, then exchange it for a smoother
feeling reel.

When ya get tired of that 12lb. XT coiling up, or when ya think the fish
have seen enough of it (whichever comes first), throw some 6lb. Fireline on
that puppy. Once you break it in to where it's lost it's black color, you'll
never go back to mono on a spinning reel. Power Pro is good, but just
doesn't cut the mustard when you're in the weeds.

Also, I noticed that the reel has what I'd refer to as a slight hesitation

Take it back and let them fiddle with it. If you take it apart and it still
feels sloppy, you may not be able to exchange it (in which case you need to
contact Al for pointers on how to exchange stuff at Wal Mart, not purchased
from Wal Mart).

My girlfriends new Daiwa reel on the other hand is
smooth as silk.

Your girlfriend's a pretty smart gal. I have a tiny Daiwa Regal Z that suits
me just fine for light lite stuff, but it too has a slight hesitation at the
start of each retrieve. I think that may be characteristic of moderately low
end reels. Abu Center Drags are smooth as silk on the retrieve, but they
weigh like 10 pounds each and that damned Anit Reverse is so awkward to
find.

One of these days....or years....I'm gonna find a set of quality spinning
reels but for now, I'm content with what's at hand.

Toodles,
Shawn
