Well, I finally got lines, leaders, flies for my upcoming adventure. Then I
headed out to the driveway for some practice. Wow! I suck. Absolutely no control beyong about 40 feet. Good control only to about 35 feet. Well, if you don't count the little mountain my leader makes with a fly on top on every fifth or sixth cast. LOL. I'm afraid to try any of the heavier flies. Oh, well give me a minute. -- Bob La Londe Win a Tackle Pack Jig Fishing - Tips and Techniques Contest Courtesy of Siebler Custom Baits http://www.YumaBassMan.com |

Oh, well give me a minute. Okay, but only a minute. ![]() little slow and you're not coming to a hard stop. Also, try aiming a little higher above the target and see if the leader straightens out all the way. A little slack in the leader/tippet is usually desirable anyway. 35 feet is usually the max distance I cast unless I'm on larger water. You can fool a lot of fish at 35 feet. Well, that's what I've heard, anyway. I've been able to fool a few at 35 feet. -- TL, Tim ------------------------ http://css.sbcma.com/timj/ |

It sounds like your forward stroke may be a little slow and you're not coming to a hard stop. Hmmmmm.... I'll have to practice speeding up my forward stroke. Its hard to do without whip cracking the leader at the transition behind you and sending your fly into orbit. LOL. Also, try aiming a little higher above the target and see if the leader straightens out all the way. I did get a little better layout by aiming higher. A little slack in the leader/tippet is usually desirable anyway. Yeah you want to lay it down in a slight zig zag on the water when fishing down stream or across current don't you. 35 feet is usually the max distance I cast unless I'm on larger water. You can fool a lot of fish at 35 feet. Actually my best day fly fishing I was standing waist deep in a grass bed and just barely laying out my fly at the top of a ripple. It was more like flipping than like fly casting. I know you can catch fish up close and personal. Well, that's what I've heard, anyway. I've been able to fool a few at 35 feet. I experimented a little with castng style and I even tried my back cast by bring my arm across my body instead of straight back. When I did that my front cast seemed to lay out really nice, but my accuracy was horrible. Kinda like sidearming with a spinning reel. Oh well. More practice is definitely in order. -- Bob La Londe Win a Tackle Pack Jig Fishing - Tips and Techniques Contest Courtesy of Siebler Custom Baits http://www.YumaBassMan.com |

Don't forget to wait until your back cast straightens out before starting your forward cast. The more line you have out, the longer the wait. -- Scott Reverse name to reply |
