Default uptiding

I wonder if someone can clarify the best way to fish off a boat in a very
strong tide,i"ve tried uptiding & just dropping over the back of the boat
with mixed results. Some web sites recommend running legers/booms or just
your standard rig with a long flowing trace & let the tide do the rest!
Would like some advice on what you think,ie rig setup, trace length & of
course like everyone else catch that fish of your dreams.thanks
