I'm still sorting through my late father-in-law's old fishing things.
Tonight I found a new in the box True Temper baitcaster. The box says Ocean City No. 1581 Level Wind Baitcasting Reel Capacity, 100yds . 15# Test Has anyone heard of True Temper reels? So far I've found several crank baits and misc. other tackle. It seems Milt fished only off and on and kept his lures in the original boxes. Bill P. |

Hi Doc, What I was able to find out for you is the following: Ocean City specialized in making salt-water reels in Philadelphia, Pa., from 1923 to 1968. During its history, the company absorbed, in 1935, Montague City Rod & Reel Co., Montague City, Mass., and, in 1939, the Edward vom Hofe Co., New York City, which made some of the finest reels on the planet for many years. During its later years, Ocean City produced many baitcasting reels, but none has significant value. The company was bought by the makers of True Temper tackle. I did a little investigation and it appears that there will be more sentimental value than monetary. Several locations were advertising Ocean City No. 1581 Level Wind Baitcasting Reels, in new condition, in the original box for anywhere between $5.00 and $35.00. I wish I could be the bearer of great news that the reel was worth thousands of dollars, but unfortunately, it's not. Give me a call on Wednesday morning, ok? -- Steve @ OutdoorFrontiers http://www.outdoorfrontiers.com G & S Guide Service and Custom Rods http://www.herefishyfishy.com |

Steve,
that True temper reel. There's a guy in FL , Tom Greene, that knows pretty much all there is to know about old reels. He's a nice guy and will talk to you on the phone. His phone # is 1-800-940-4886. He helped me a few years ago with an old never used Luxor serf reel I had. He has a website too. http://www.antiquereels.com/contact.htm Jim L "Steve @ OutdoorFrontiers" wrote in message ...
