Default Swap Flyz fished?

I'm probably not the one who should start this thread, as I haven't ever
fished a swap fly that I have received. BTAIM, I'm curious if any of the
flyz I have tied have caught fish for others? I suspect others might like
to know the same, but I ain't postin' this thread for them!

Well even though you aren't postin' this thread for them........

Like you, I don't fish them either but I do use them to tie copies. I
think the two flies that have been most successful for me have been
Charley Wilson's flour. orange stimulator and an introduction to the
Usual (which is an unusual pattern out West) tied either by Stan or Tom
(can't remember which).

I fish the flies sent to me, and hope others will fish mine. It's a way to
live vicariously through OP's experiences and "catch" some fish on waters I
may never see. I've caught many fish on the swap flies over the years,
including your Riffle Grizzly, which floats like a cork - even in fast
water.

Hi Op and Tim,
Hmm . . .apparently I don't have many left. I have some from Tim sent
separately, a few from an Adams swap, and flies from the swap where the
Riffle Grizzly appeared.
After I fondle swap flies a bit I seem to give them away to folks who don't
tie, but like to fly fish. . . . some youngsters and some 'ol farts. But
not to anyone. It usually doesn't take very long when I meet someone on a
river/stream . . .for me to determine. . .in my simple mind . . .if I think
they enjoy the outdoors . . .not just catching fish.
The thing that helps me with swap flies are the pics. I have a paper copy
folder that I use for reference. Very nice of folks to take the time to
post them. . .you know who you are.
Once I have touched the fly and looked it over I can get pretty close with
just the pic . . .heh . . .heh. . .the recipe doesn't hurt either.

For Op . . .send me your snail mail address. You mentioned in another
thread something about a tying vise. I may be able to assist. The cost is
high. You would owe me one fly.

Dave, if you are talkin' about givin' away a vise, I couldn't in good
conscience accept a vise without paying anything less than fair market
value. Thankfully, I have no good conscience, so maybe we can work out a
fair trade.

E-mail me details.

Oh yeah, anyone else got gear they are in dire need of relieving themselves
of, SEND IT TO ME! Rods, reels, gold
da-ballons, bearer bonds, cash...I accept it all for one sadly tied fly!

Thanks Tim! I imagine one day I may fish some of the flyz that I have
received, but currently I like showing them off to friends and co-workers,
and just admiring them--no, I don't have a life outside of ROFF.

I haven't had an opportunity to fish the Riffled Grizzly myself. I will get
out in the very near future and begin tossin' some dryz to anxious troutz!
I met a rare flyfishin' fella at work today. We talked about hittin' some
water together this Spring.

I remember readin' that post--mostly 'cause my fly wasn't mentioned :~^(

Seriously, I need to tie up some copies of swap flyz and fish them this
Spring and Summer. Right now I can't bring myself to fishin' the
originals--call me strange? Unlike so many others my tyin' skills ain't all
that good, so as I continue to join in on swapz, maybe I will be able to
replicate some of the flyz that I think will work on my home waters. I'm
actually scared to fish some of the wet fly patterns, nymphs, and streamers,
as I primarily dry fly fish and need to learn techniques for the other types
of flyz, so that I don't lose them on the first cast!

Your finely tied Grizzly Riffle was slated to be the Virgin-Fly-Sacrifice of
DDFS Trials, Round Two, but the round was cancelled due to a salmon run in
Michigan. I'm told it happens every year. :-)

I know what you mean about being a little afraid to fish the flies you get
in swaps. They're sort of like a part of the 'record', no? I guess it's at
least a similar discussion to that surrounding the use/non-use of a fine
antique rod. Sure, it looks really nice over the mantle, but it's a fishing
rod, and IMO, it ought to be fished.

If you re-read that post, perhaps your memory was stirred up to recall the
horrible little handwritten mailing label tags I used for my humble
submission? I had a bit more fun this time. Too bad my fly will still be of
the same somewhere-between-****ty-and-moderate quality. Just like most
manufacturers today... all packaging and no product.

Okay Op,
You drive a hard bargain. It now has to be " two" flies.
(Renzetti Cam Vise as you mentioned.. . . if I can find it.) Bought it a
while ago . . .haven't used it. Still using the original one with the knob.
.. . .plus a few other vises . . .of different sorts. I figure if I haven't
used this one in about 9 months or so . . .I probably don't need it.
Enjoy it . . .But you now owe me "two" flies.
