Just a quick one..

Spent the morning fishing the fly stretch at Green Lane Park on the
Perkiomen. Water was real low, but success regardless. Caught many
streambred browns (none over 12 inches, most 6-8 inches) on wet flies for a
bit. Switched to a streamer and got into a couple of Perkiomen Steelhead.
Only landed one, around 18 inches, but that one made the weekend.

After taking a siesta and gassing up, I wandered up a new stretch for the
late afternoon/evening hatch and was not disappointed. Have never seen such
great hatches on the Perkie, lots of different types of bugs, many midges,
several mayflies in wide varying sizes including Hendricksons, baetis of
several varieties, the almighty sulphur (huge ones too, Penn's creek size),
and some what looked to be large White Cahill. Very strange mix of
spring/early summer bugs, but at the end of the night had a quite a nice
mix of spinners for all the varieties above along with tons of emerging
sulphurs.

Even though there was a heavy population a PA raised rainbows, and they all
came up throughout the afternoon and evening it was quite a challenge to
figure out what they were taking. They were keying on one of the miniscule
midges which I never figured out despite trying at least 15 different
flavors. Thinking they were taking a size 26 red spinner which I saw
frequently float by (and no match in my box). Eventually the evening hatch
saved my ego, with three sulphur infatuated fish. Will be returning over
the next couple of weeks to catch the sulphur spinner falls yet to come.

I suspect similar hatches occurring throughout the state since we have had
practically no rain and the water is heating up quickly.

Joe in amazement---you frequently saw size 26 spinners floating by !! damm
Mike you make this guy feel old--I've given up fishing with anything smaller
than size 16 and don"t use them in fast water !!!

Rough evening here.
fishing out of kayak around 5pm--four weight and small yellow popper ( maybe
size 10 } got a few hits and two good hook up on bass but lost both half
way in--think they spit out hook as I just did not set it hard enough---too
much slack in fly line --will learn to use Dave Whitlock's direct to the
water presentation.
So switched to spinning rig and hooked a mid size bass on small plug with
duel treble hooks--- as I tried to pick him up by lower jaw [ per tv shows ]
he leaped and two hooks caught my left index finger. -

Two hours later doctor at local med center dug them out.
reminds me of Jeff's story where he got hooked , drank for two hours then
Indian doctor dug out hook with comment --" next time you might want to
debarb hook before you fish!"
I had no chance to drink and after long wait my doctor [from Egypt I think ]
simply said--" this is going to hurt a little bit."

Danl--please tell Cindy I will always carry my hook removable kit in future
!

at least your guy was thoughtful enough to warn you about the pain... my
guy was ****ed he had to be on call and then actually got called. he
enjoyed my pain.

btw, in the latest of my fishing miscues, i was bitten by a snake while
jim and i were pulling the gheenoe over one of the grassy banks at
mattamuskeet.never saw it, but had a sharp pain, blood spurted from one
of the holes. didn't know what it was at the time, but when i got home i
discovered two fang holes in the shin about 6 inches above ankle-high.
probably a small copperhead... but, anyhow, um...perhaps you should add
a snake-bite kit too...

i would guess it was a small moccasin. i've seen them around the lake,
but never a copperhead.

Probably just as well you didn't figure it for a snake bite while Jim was
around, you probably would been subjected to some southern wilderness worst case
scenario medical attention. g

thanks. I figured it for a copperhead simply because of the mild
reaction I had to the bite. I thought ol cottonmouth venom to be a
tough act, and i hear they latch on.

If a cockroach can survive a nuclear attack then surely
a divorce lawyer can survive a little old cottonmouth.

Could be worse. At least this one is still legal......for now.

Wolfgang
waiting for the day they outlaw snake venom......THEN just watch what
happens to the price.....and the quality!

g well, when the venom market gets tight, i know a spot we can get a
fix. but it'll be some nasty business.
