Rigged under a float or Texas/carolina rigged Another great live bait rig is the Night crawler worm with a weedless #4 hook stuck through it's mouth, and back out,, Texas , Carolina, or no weight rigged, just like an artificial worm, you will also pick up some big blue gills and cat fish with it. -- Rodney Long, Inventor of the Long Shot "WIGGLE" rig, SpecTastic Thread Boomerang Fishing Pro. ,Stand Out Hooks ,Stand Out Lures, Mojo's Rock Hopper & Rig Saver weights, Decoy Activator and the EZKnot http://www.ezknot.com |

Almost any baitfish will work. The place where i get my bait sell what they
call "Shiners". I think they are emerald shiners and they work very well. Best to get them 3 to 5 inches long, or slightly bigger depending o the size of the fish you're after. If you catch your own bait, almost any wild minnow or shiner will do fine, but only use the larger ones - 3" or larger. Smaller bait usually means that sunfish, perch, and crappie will get it before the bass do. For Smallmouths, small creek chubs and fallfish work too, but I've never had any luck catching LM with chubs. -Zimmy |

Shiners, chubs, suckers and other minnows, nightcrawlers, hellgrammites and
crawdads are all good baits.... but the all-time best springtime live bait for bass, IMHO, is salamanders, or water dogs -- the animals on which plastic "lizard" baits are patterned. They are especially good for river fishing. I can gather a couple dozen in a half hour by raking aside clumps of leaves in woodland ditches, or by moving larger stones in shallow creeks in the woods around my home. Put them in a plastic tub with lots of holes punched in the lid. Place some moist soil in the bottom, and add moss clumps for them to hide among. Some salamanders live mostly in the water, while others crawl around under the damp forest litter near creeks and drainages. For all of them, the important thing for keeping them healthy and lively (well... lively until they sacrifice themselves for the greater good of bass fishing) is to keep their skin moist. If you can't use them right away and need to wet the soil, use spring water (distilled, rain water, or tap water that has sat uncovered for a day or two), as chlorinated water will kill them.
