I recently started using a fly rod to catch bass. Most in this NG
recommended the use poppers and they do work, BUT I've managed to catch 50 sunnies and one small bass so far. Is there another method that will help with the bass to sunny ratio? (I've been using Betts poppers like these: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...pers&noImage=0 ) Thanks Roger |

They simply can't get it in their mouth. Bass on the other hand.... brians |

Roadkill streamers......works every time.
Well, for smallmouths anyway. Seems like that would mean the big mouths would eat them too. |

Brian's post to up the popper size is the answer for LM bass. That Betts
collection you bought looks like little size 8, 10 and 12 sized hooks. For middle sized bass (up to 5-6 pounds) I usually recommend hook sizes 4, 2, and 1. You may need a bass taper line to throw the larger bugs. Another possibility especially as the summer winds on is to fish early and late using a white body or black body popping bug with some white to see it. Also seek to find a place to cast those big bugs where heavy cover is near deep water. The water you may have been fishing may have contained mostly sunnies. If your daytime temps get in the 90s or 100s you may want to night fish for bass with a glow in the dark popping bug. Hope this helps. Good luck! John "roger" wrote in message oups.com... Thanks Using smaller bugs this time of the year is almost certainly going to result in more sunfish/bream/etc. As others have suggested, switch to larger poppers, flies, etc. and that'll go a long way to solving your "problem." Heck, whip a chunk of bucktail (and a hackle or two if handy) onto a larger (say a 2, give or take 2-3 sizes) humpy hook, attach a cork head, and get after 'em. If you have the materials, do a variety of color combinations and experiment. If you don't tie, Google up "bass popper" and match them up at your favorite tackle purveyor. HTH, R |

Stop using such tiny flies and use some real bass baits. Like large Woolly Buggers or other streamers, or large frog poppers. Stop wimping about! But what you will find is that you will probably catch no more bass, just no sunfish. |

bigger bas bugs spun deer hair $17 per doz.
http://www.fly-fishing-flies.com/cat...5_products.htm some salt water flies are pretty slick as the imitate bait fish, but a pain to cast on light line. |

I change directory structures 2-3 times a week, on my server, and Google is always a month behind, so I have lots of broken links on Google. The above should work, for a while anyway. |
