In one of the threads someone mentioned they joined in 1985?
Guess some of you are closing in on your silver anniversary pin.

ROFF itself dates from April 1996.

Some of the dudes, tripper, Gula, Fortenberry were doing some
discussions on whatever it was that predated ROFF using some nerdy UNIX
stuff or some such.

Nah, not me. You might be thinking about Scott. All those .edu and
computer company guys were the early adopters.

I have been a computer geek since 1969 though.

I think I was in on the ROFF CFV, but can't seem to find it.

I found my earliest incarnation as INS_ASHS, which was an instructional
account set up on the Hopkins VAX system. It was after the day of the
punch card, but to think of the environment, not by much!

We used to go log in on VT52's, if we were lucky, or VT100's if we were
real lucky. If we were unlucky, we'd log in on real live teletypes-- no
screen, just printouts of each line. We used to figure out fun things
to do by emailing each other control codes that would really screw
around with VT terminals. Eventually, the mail system started stripping
out control codes, and then we found ways to insert them into the
subject lines, which would screw terminals when you requested a mail
directory listing.

Email was easy, as long as it was to a local user, but could turn into
quite the ordeal to get the path right to an offsite user.

For the instructional accounts, we accrued $3.00 in processor time
daily, accruable up to $9.00. If we had a big job to do, you'd have to
time it so that you could run into deficit between accounting passes.
If you ran too deeply negative, you wouldn't be able to log on for days.

rec.outdoors.fishing.fly is an unmoderated newsgroup which passed its
vote for creation by 336:32 as reported in news.announce.newgroups on
9 May 1994.

Of course, the actual birthdate of roff is the day your NNTP
admin issued the control statement to add it to your list of
newsgroups. Before May 9, 1994 there was rec.outdoors.fishing
and before that, circa 1985 or so was UUnet, Bitnet, DECnet,
and a bunch of other stuff I don't care to remember.

Can you find a link to the CFV results? I'm having trouble finding it.

It's been around for many, many years, but only became relevant a few years
ago. Coincidentally, I began reading and posting to roff about the same
time.

I don't know that anyone saved all that. If I wanted to look
I'd start here ftp://ftp.uu.net/usenet/news.announce.newgroups/
