After reading many reviews about on-board battery chargers I've found one
common thread - they all fail relatively quickly. I'm not certain if only those that have problems post their reviews or if the darn things really fail at such a high rate. What's the best you can expect out of a charger and who makes the most robust ones? I'm looking for a 15 amp three bank charger - I usually have the time to charge my batteries overnight so I don't need to pump 100 amps/hour in to them. TIA Mike |

The only thing that I've found in a commonality is that they're a great invention. Some are better than others, but they're all better than charging batteries via a battery charger. I had great luck with mine in my last boat, I believe it was made by Dual Pro. Four years and never a problem. As far as I know, it's still going strong. The onboard system I have now is made by Stealth. The neat thing about this system is that all three type 31 batteries are charged either via AC power or by the outboard when the motor is running. http://www.stealth1charging.com/index.html With this system, I can run my 36 volt trolling motor hard all day and it's back up to peak charge in mere hours after I get home. -- Steve @ OutdoorFrontiers http://www.outdoorfrontiers.com G & S Guide Service and Custom Rods http://www.herefishyfishy.com |

TIA Mike I have a 3 bank Pro Charger made by Charging Systems International of Nashville, Tn. I have no connection with this Co. I have had this charger and it has been plugged in almost full time for 8 years. It has been through one marina fire at Elm Hill Marina as well as 2 tornadoes that hit the marina. I can highly recommend it. Jack in Brentwood, TN. |

TIA Mike Bass Cat Boats actually reccomends a particular brand (Lester I think) of portable charger, but installs onboard chargers because the customers want them. I respect the opinions of the guys at Bass Cat very much. -- Bob La Londe Fishing Arizona & The Colorado River Fishing Forums & Contests http://www.YumaBassMan.com -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com |

TIA Mike I have a 2 bank charger on my little G3 (it only has 1 starting batt and 1 trolling batt) that is the Cabela's house brand - which I think are actually Pro Mariner brand chargers rebadged for Cabelas. Has worked great for about 2 solid years now. I have the Cabelas Pro Sport 12. It's 12 Amps/distributed. Isn't a speed demon but doesn't take all night either. http://tinyurl.com/nqx6a (this is simply a shortened link to Cabelas' onboard chargers page) I chose this one due to its distributed charging methodology and small footprint since my boat is not large and has very little "extra" space in which to mount such a charger. |

I had a 3 bank Pro Mriner that I bought brand new for my Baker Waco, and it cooked a couple batteries before I threw it in the trash. I picked up a sponsorship from Guest and put a Guest in both of my boats and haven't had any real problems since. -- Bob La Londe www.YumaBassMan.com |

I guess at any given time, any brand of charger can go haywire - I had a basic Schumacher charger spaz . I've had no probs with mine. I use a Cabelas AGM sealed starter/troller combo battery as my starter and one of those yellow Wally World 29 series DC marine batteries for my troller and it has done fine by them for the past 18 months. Never gets too hot, has never caused any issues with the batteries that I've been able to see. -- Bob La Londe www.YumaBassMan.com |
