Default A New Rod...

On Sunday I somehow managed to break the tip section of my Scott 3wt.

I am almost in tears. I will be able to get a balanced replacement by
sending them the butt section but I need to find another 3wt. to use while
it's broken/being repaired. Whatever I get will be kept as a backup and
loaner.

I have gotten very used to the stiffer action of the Scott rods. I've
thought about getting a less expensive rod like a Sage but the last time I
tried a Sage it felt "sloppy" to me. They may very well be making something
now that I would like.

Any suggestions for a budget rod that may have some of the characteristics
I'm used to?

I know the Temple Forks are constantly hyped on the net by folks like
me, but I really like my 7.5 ft 3 weight (two pc) basic model. It's
about $80. It's probably not as fast as the Scott but you should try
one. Mine works fine, even with a foam hopper and sometimes two bead
heads. bruce h

I'll second the TFO 2-pc. But you're right, it's gonna feel slow
compared to the Scott. I carried both the TFO and my Scott S3 to Nawth
Cackalacky last year, and the Scott never made it out of the case. The
TFO was better suited for the tight quarters/short line fishing. Part
of the reason was because it's got a slower action, so it loaded better
on short casts with just a little line out.

Are these available at a particular retail outlet or just catalog? I would
like to wave it around before making purchase.

You seem to like to wave it around quite a bit, but is that legal, even
in Mass.? Maybe finding a shop with a back room you can use for a few
minutes might be prudent...I mean, sooner or later, someone is gonna
grab some cuticle snips and nip it off...if they haven't already...

Go to Http://www.templeforkflyrods.com and click on dealers. If you
don't find one close enough to you then send an e-mail to the rep for
your area. These guys are not in business to keep you from trying their
rods. These rods are not works of art...they are tools... backed up
with the best customer service. I don't work for them, but I am a happy
customer. If you had bought one of their rods in the first place, you
would have had a replacement rod by now.

You didn't say what model Scott you have, or what model Sage you tried,
so it's kind of tough recommending something. The TFO recommendations
are good(IMHO), and I own a few. I would also add, for a mid priced rod,
Redington's CPS rods are very nice. Components are top notch. Fit and
finish is excellent.

Thanks Wayne. (and Dale)

Blue Northern is two miles down the road. I'll check'em out.

I went to Blue Northern today and tried the Temple Forks Series I 7'6"
3wt. IMO pretty sloppy. Even for $90. The shop dude recommended the Pro
series 4 piece. He said it would be considerably faster at $140.

While there I also tried an Albright. Liked it.

Any thoughts?

Ric
