Default Simple pleasures

Tonight my son brought home two cigars and wanted to spend some time
just sitting and talking. These occurrences become few and far between
as he gets older, which makes them all the more enjoyable. He's the
youngest and will be moving out to his own place within the next month,
so these times are important. We just spent the last two hours on the
back deck talking about things. . . and nothing at all. Our two dogs
were there with us, just loving being outdoors. The recent series of
rainy days have made this a rare happening, and they were glad for it.

As dusk came, so did the fireflies - not just a few here and there, but
the woods were flashing like Christmas lights. There are only a few
times a year that give me this feeling of euphoria; the first snow, the
leaves turning colors in the fall, the bright green of early spring -
and then there are the fireflies. Some years, especially recent years,
they haven't been around much. I think it has probably been five or six
years since I've seen them in these numbers. Watching them is akin to
watching a roaring fire - hypnotizing and peaceful. If you live, as I
did for most of my life, where none of these things exist, I think it
makes them all the more special, although I can't imagine ever tiring of
them.

I thought of posting this as OT, but I don't think it is at all. We all
(yes, you) fly fish for the simple pleasure of it, and I get the same
type of feeling when I'm at the river side. I've been reminded tonight
that I should take advantage of the decent weather and get out tomorrow
to chase the trout. I hope all my roffian friends (you know who you are)
can do the same.
