book for J R and Wolfgang

Just enjoyed reading Robert Hughes " a Jerk On One End" - reflections of a
mediocre fisherman
recognizing your enjoyment of quoting historical circumstance think you'll
would enjoy this little book.

-English line soldiers in the Crimean war bitterly resented being issued
rations of a black , fishy, granular jam in place of their regular bully
beef. It was caviar.
and so forth

Public library doesn't have it, so I'll track it down at the local
bookstores. Thanks for the suggestion, Joe.

I'd have replied to this thread sooner, but the title rang a faint
bell.......had to wait till I got home and rummaged through the card
catalog......which was (and remains.....mostly) under a pile of clothes
and.....what else?.....books.

Turns out I already have a copy of "A Jerk on One End," a gift (part of
a large armload) from Joel back in February. Haven't read it yet. A
brief scan of the files reveals that it has not yet made the "to be
read soon" list. This should not be construed as disparaging in any
way......hell, how would I know?.....the list is semi-imaginary,
completely arbitrary, highly changeable, and generally ignored anyway.
The good news is it's all mine, and I get to do whatever I want with
it.

And thanks for the heads ups, IJ. It might interest you to know that I
recently took up one of your previous recommendations from a few months
ago. A couple of weeks ago I finally finished (after a long delay
occasioned by slaving for two solid weeks on Becky's new backyard deck)
"The Founding Fish." As I may have mentioned here, I wasn't really
eager to delve into McPhee again after choking on "Annals of The Former
World" sometime last year and having maxed out on fishing literature
some years before. They say you can't judge a book by its
cover.....but this one grabbed me. Good thing. I'd fogotten how good
McPhee at his best really is. He will never be a truly great writer,
but he has at least one trick up his sleeve that makes the time
expended in reading him well spent. I don't believe I have ever
encountered another writer who can pack as much information into
readble sentences as he does. Definitely worth the effort and (coming,
as it did, from the bargain bin) expense.

well, well, all this talk of books makes a boy think maybe he really
SHOULD take kennie's advice........and learn to read.

It's been a while since I read that ... but I can second (third?
foruth? Joes' comments.

The author was/is an art critic dating back to 70's TV here in Aus. He
had/has an affected posh manner of speech that was quite nauseating.
Possibly one of the most unlikely 'good' fishing book authors ever -
certainly from downunder.

I like McPhee quite a bit, although I've not read his whole oeuvre. Not
nearly! But "Encounters with the Archdruid" and "Tables of Contents" (a
collection of pieces originally published in the New Yorker) are both
excellent. Several friends (IJ notwithstanding!) have recommended "Founding
Fish", which from what I understand wouldn't really be classified a "fishing
book". Onto the list it goes.

I haven't encountered either of those myself. I'd certainly give them a
try.....and I'll probably give "Annals of the Former World" another shot

Well, it's MORE than a fishing book, but there's enough about "sport"
fishing to make it worthwhile for enthusiasts. If nothing else, McPhee's
views should be of interest to anyone who is not yet sick to death of the
C&R vs. C&K "debate."

You know how it is......summer is a busy month around here.

I'll check my notes this evening to see whether there might be anything of
interest to pass along. At the moment, I'm immersed in Ron Chernow's
"Titan," which is proving to be much more engaging than I guessed it would
be.
