Default Out this morning

Went to the bro-in-laws 1/2 acre tank this morning, as 20 mph winds and
10' boat don't mix. Tried the Strike King XXX for the first time. Used a
7-1/2" ribbon tail worm. Liked the strength of the bait, but the ribbon
tail kept getting wrapped around weed stems. Also, the bait was tough
enough that I was concerned about getting a good hookset.
Fish weren't cooperating, they apparently didn't want anything I had
in my overnight bag-sized tackle box. When I downsized to a 3" grub, all
I got was perch. I threw a Mann's baby 1 minus at the deep end,
retrieving it along the weedline in about 4' of water. At one point I
killed the retrieve and let the crank pop to the surface, and just as I
started to reel, I saw a swirl behind the bait. I casted back to the
same spot, and got bit. It was a 13" catfish. I've heard of them taking
spinners, but never expected one to hit a lure next to the surface.
The sun was getting higher, and the temps hotter, and I was about to
call it quits when I hit a bass on the head with that baby 1 minus. I
had thrown it in a little hole in the weeds in about 18" of water, and I
didn't even have time to close the bail on my spinning reel when my line
was coming back at me. It wasn't going to come unbuttoned, though It
took the front treble in the corner of the mouth, and the rear in the
tongue. I really like that bait. Felt a lot better about the trip after
catching a bass, and felt better about only catching one when it was 21"
long, 3lb, 10oz. Not bad for a 1/2 acre tank.
